Coach's Corner - Step by Step Directions on Completing Background Check, Concussion Training & SafeSport Training



On behalf of the Watertown Association for Youth Soccer (WAYS), thank you for your interest in serving as a volunteer coach.

Please note that prior to any coach commencing the season with his/her team, you are required to complete a Background Check (if over the age of 18), SafeSport Training and Concussion Training in accordance with the rules set forth by the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association, as well as state and federal law.

Step-by-step directions on how to complete each of these respected requirements are below for your reference and convenience:


1. Background Check (for anybody over the age of 18) 
 


§ To complete a background check, visit: cjsa-jdp.sportsaffinity.com and complete the online application.

§ Select the season.

§ Choose Background Check as your registration type.

§ Returning Coaches: If you are a returning coach, please do not create a new account. Please use the Forgot Username or Password? link to reset your password.

§ New Coaches and Volunteers: Please Create New Account.

§ Once your account has been created the application will ask if you need to add any family members. If there are no family members to add, please click Continue.

§ Please select Register as Coach/ Admin button across from your name to begin your application.

§ After you make this selection, a pop-up window will appear on your screen. Select BGC as your play level from the drop-down menu.

§ On the application, any fields marked with a red asterisk (*) are required to be filled out. Please click the down arrows to expand the drop-down menus. This will provide an area to upload your photo or certificates.

§ Choose your Primary Club (Watertown)

§ Once all information has been entered/ uploaded on the application please scroll down and click Save & Next Page.

§ Next, read and accept any ELAs (Electronic Legal Agreements) by checking the box across from each agreement. Once all boxes have been checked click Agree & Continue.

§ There is no fee collected from coaches for background checks. Please click No Payment due, Continue.

§ On the next page, choose the Continue to Background Check button.

§ NOTE: Connecticut Junior Soccer Association has partnered with the background check company JD Palatine to run Risk Management. In order to process your background check your Social Security must be provided.

§ Please enter your social security number and choose the Submit BGC button to submit your profile for processing. Your Risk Management application is not finalized until this is completed.

§ Click OK on the system generated alert.

§ The screen will refresh to display the confirmation of your submission and your Order ID.

§ Your background check application has been submitted. You may now exit out of the screen.

§ The background check is only valid for one (1) calendar year and thus if you are a returning coach, you will need to complete this annually.

2. SafeSport Training

i. Click on the following link to get started: https://safesporttrained.org/#/login

§ Create a username and password.

§ Complete the required information.

§ Organization Member ID is 89706-227493.

§ Name of Sport or Community Organization is WAYS.

ii. Complete the SafeSport Trained Core Training, which is 90 minutes in duration. Once finished, save a copy of the training certificate.

iii. The SafeSport Training is only valid for one (1) calendar year and thus if you are a returning coach, you will need to complete the refresher course annually.  When renewing your SafeSport Training, please complete the refresher training that is listed under "available courses."


3. Concussion Training

i. Click on the following link to get started: https://www.train.org/cdctrain/course/1089818/

§ Click Create an Account and create a username and password.

§ Complete the required information.

§ Click on the green button that says, Pre-Assessment and begin the course.

ii. Complete the HEADS UP to Youth Sports: Online Training, which is available to coaches, parents, sports officials, athletic trainers, and other individuals interested in learning about concussion safety through the CDC. Once finished, save a copy of the training certificate.

iii. This is a one-time training and thus there is no need to complete this training more than one time.


*Once you have completed the SafeSport and Concussion Training, you will then be able to upload your Certifications of Completion for both on your WAYS Account under the Volunteer Page.*


If you are experiencing any technical difficulties, please feel free to contact the WAYS Coordinator of the respective division (In-Town Recreation, Travel, Little World Cup) that you are coaching.

WAYS strongly encourages our Little World Cup, In-Town Recreation, and Travel coaches to utilize the coaching resources on the Connecticut Junior Soccer Association website as well as the US Youth Soccer Lesson Plans, which are both accessible by clicking on the above respective links.   These resources will be extremely helpful when planning/running your respective practices.
